1. Couchsurfing! It is a community for travelers and everyone who are open to meet new people, host them at home, or just share a dinner or coffee. You don’t need to travel to be a member, it is not even necessary to host travelers at your own home (though, it’s really worth it!). The network is huge, people are nice and friendly, meetings are organized all around the world, you can also join various discussion groups. Come to a meeting, host a traveler, organize an event by yourself. You’ll meet the most welcoming people ever. There are more communities of the kind, but Couchsurfing is definitely the biggest and the most active. Hospitality club is another one tested by time, but the user interface puts many down.
2. Meetup.com – you can organize a meeting group of your own, or join an already existing one. Choose a group according to your interests, and maybe they will become your good friends. Expat groups exist in various cities in many countries.
3. University – you don’t need to be a student, only young-minded, to come to various events, student parties, join international students for trips – many of them are also new in town, you’ll have common interests. If you are at university yourself, you can also join various organizations and initiatives. When it comes time to find a job, such experience will be very helpful.
4. Volunteer work – always needed, and a good place to meet helpful people, do something that you really like (e.g., teach), and improve your CV, too. Type in a search engine “volunteer work MyTown”, and follow the links. If you have kids, join or organize parent’s initiatives at school. Otherwise, you can also help at the community center or in the church. Not for you? Then volunteer in student’s cafe or any youth organization.
5. Say hello to your neighbors. Depending on the place you live, you can organize a picnic, invite them for coffee and cake, cleanup the garden together, offer to help with pets or kids.
6. If you are very bored and have free time, stick an announcement in a local supermarket that you are babysitting. Like this, you will earn extra cash and spend quality time with kids, at the same time, meeting their parents and maybe becoming friends.
7. Join evening courses – learn new language, cooking, photography, attend dance classes. Even better, join a theater or dance group that requires commitment, and soon you will be going on tours.
